A particular strength of the LDS church is meticulous record keeping about its constituents. Once in the church the records follow you and allow leadership to contact you to perform missions. Catholicism and other Christian sects also has this trait in the documentation of sacraments. I think if you view religion as a Meme, this trait facillitates persitence of the religion as a social organization, ensuring that people come back periodically. It also facilitates communication among members which is vital if you want your religion to be multicelluar.
